So You Wanna See the Hollywood Sign?

Everyone visiting LA asks where to see the Hollywood Sign. It's harder than you'd think! Here's our unofficial guide to the best viewing spots - from tourist stops to hidden local secrets.
The first thing most LA visitors ask is, "Where can I see the Hollywood Sign?" Short answer: it's harder than you'd think.
For starters, Los Angeles is a massive, often smoggy city. And while you can spot the sign from lots of places, actually getting close to it—especially at night—is tricky. It's unlit now (though it wasn't always). Back in 1923, when it first went up as a real estate promotion, it was decked out in 4,000 lights and visible for miles. But by the late '70s, the original sign had crumbled into disrepair, and when it was rebuilt in 1978—thanks in part to a fundraising campaign—the lights were left off.
The Hollywood Sign replica at Sunset Ranch Hollywood makes for a great photo op!
Today, the sign sits high up in the hills, surrounded by narrow, twisty roads where cars aren't allowed. Hikers, dog walkers, and horseback riders share the trails. And while the city has upped security to protect the sign itself, it's never really figured out how to offer a proper place to view it. There's no official overlook with clear signage, comfortable access, and legal parking. (Go figure.)
But don't worry—we've got you covered. Below is our unofficial, very honest list of the best places to see the Hollywood Sign. We'll start with the honorable mentions and build up to the best of the best. Some are easy. Some take effort. All are worth the view.
Honorable Mentions
- Hollywood Sign Replica at Sunset Ranch Hollywood - Best viewed on horseback. Real horses, real trails, and a pretty cool photo op.
- Top of the W Hollywood - Grab a mojito and look north. That's it. That's the whole tip.
- Hollywood Bowl Overlook - Just off Mulholland Drive near Outpost. Tour buses galore, but the city view is unbeatable. Hike to the circular platform for a peek at the sign.
- Hollywood & Highland Center - This place was built to frame the sign in the background. From the Disney El Capitan Theater to the upper-level walkways and even that weird cement bed near CPK—you'll find a dozen great angles.
The List - From Good to Great
- Lake Hollywood Dam - Hard to reach, worse to park. The lot is dirt-only and bumpy enough to rattle your fillings. But the dam is cool, and the view is clean.
- Beachwood Drive - From the middle of the road just before the old Hollywoodland gate, you'll see one of the most famous—and dangerous—views. Tourists love it. Locals hate it. Take a pic from the car and move along. Trust us.
- Captain's Roost - This little gem in Griffith Park burned during the 2007 wildfire but has since grown back with new landscaping and a pair of haunting, charred palm rows. A bench, a breeze, and a great angle on the sign.
- Griffith Observatory - Iconic. Classic. Tourist-packed. You'll get a selfie with the James Dean bust and the Hollywood Sign in the background. Stick around for the space exhibits or grab a bite at the cafe.
- Mount Hollywood - You'll get a bit of a sideways "Ollywoo" angle, but the sweeping 360° views of the city make up for it. A favorite for sunset hikes.
- Lake Hollywood Park - Picnic benches, a wide-open view of the sign, and dogs galore. Bring lunch. Stay a while.
- The Bat Cave (Bronson Canyon) - A former quarry turned filming location. Batman shot scenes here, and so did dozens of other productions. Go on a weekday and you might see a shoot in progress. Hike through the cave for a cinematic sign view.
- Above Sunset Ranch Hollywood - There's a narrow dirt path most people miss. If you find it, you'll get one of the most unique views of the sign—and a rare overhead look at Sunset Ranch.
- Mt. Lee Drive Viewing Area - Once fenced off, now open. This is one of the closest legal viewing spots you'll find.
- Hollyridge Trail (Lower) - This was once the site of an old water tower, now repurposed as a casual overlook. The trail is closed to the public, but it's worth knowing about if you're already at Sunset Ranch.
- Hollyridge Trail (Upper) - A little higher up, past the ranch's back entrance. Watch out for horses and don't block the trail. Beautiful spot.
- Mount Lee - The big one. Hike all the way up and you'll be above the Hollywood Sign, looking down on it—and the whole city beyond. The final climb past the gate to the left is where the magic happens.
